SHOP CULTURE IN SARAWAK
Miri Handicraft Centre

The Miri Handicraft Centre on Jln Brooke is a wonderful display of northern Sarawak's indigenous arts and crafts. Individual producers run the stalls, and craftspeople can often be seen at work. Penan mats and basketry, Orang Ulu beading and woodcarvings, and a range of textiles from around the state are among the items for sale. Weekend cultural performances are done on occasion. Daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Waving & Basketry
The diverse indigenous communities here weave palm, rattan, tree barks, bamboo, and several other plants taken from the jungles into works of art. The Bidayuh are noted for their 'kesah' mats, which are sturdily woven from rattan and beaten tree bark, while the Melanaus and Malays are known for their intricately plaited baskets, colourful mats, caps, and house decorative items made from sago, pendanus, and palm leaves. The Ibans also weave beautiful arrowroot patterned mats that only show up in indirect light.
Pua Kumbu
Iban women are among the best weavers of Pua Kumbu, a twisted or'ikat' cloth that is tie-dyed and expertly woven on a backstrap loom. Many of the designs/patterns are woven from memory since the technique is passed down from generation to generation. To produce a new design, a skilled weaver will require an inspirational dream.
Pottery
Beautiful and distinctive handcrafted ornamental and practical earthenware is produced by family-run pottery kilns.
Beadworks
The Orang Ulu women are the masters of this art form. Antique necklaces, headgears, and baby carriers in their possession include precious beads from China, Venice, and the Middle East, indicating a centuries-old trading culture. While these ancient beads were once utilised for trading, this ancient art is undergoing a resurrection, and they are currently making ceramic beads for their traditional clothing and trading.
